Announcing the new AALLU...
Greetings My Sistahs!
As African Asian Latina Lesbians United (AALLU) prepares for its 10th Anniversary Conference, I thought now would be an excellent time to reflect on where AALLU has been and where we would like to be in the near future.
Formerly known as African American Lesbians United, AALLU was created on the premise that lesbians of color needed a safe space. A place where we can come together in order to acquire greater knowledge about the world, to network, and to offer each other support.
On a monthly basis AALLU has prided itself on obtaining knowledgeable professional within their respective fields to provide womyn with the necessary tools to enhance their lives. In the past, our networking events have provided opportunities to for personal and communal growth.
Currently, AALLU provides similar opportunities; however it will no longer meet on a monthly basis. Instead we will focus our energies on providing quarterly events that will have greater impact and meaning to l/g/b/t/i community. We especially feel the need to honor those who have contributed towards the growth and development of our community now--while their still living. For example in October 2005 AALLU honored Carmen Vazquez, Deputy Executive Director of Empire State Pride Agenda.
In the future AALLU would like to continue to provide that safe nurturing space for all womyn of color. AALLU ideally should have its own facility were we can come together and support each others personal growth and development as well as that of the community. AALLU’s political involvement within the community will continue to strengthen and develop in order to ensure our voices will be heard.
With your continued support, these opportunities will develop. As AALLU will be there for you, it is important that you be there for us. Together we will continue to make a difference not only the way others see us but how we see ourselves.
Peace in the Life,
